Candlelight Christmas Vigil

at the US embassy, Grosvenor Square,

Monday 11th December, 5.30 pm - 7.30 pm

Our Christmas Vigil 2006, with a special Christmas Present suggestion for the current US administration.....

The vigil was well attended and very sociable whilst we mixed a festive season atmosphere with our ever-urgent message......... .A select band also made it to the pub for the Crimbo Party - food, drinks and a convivial end to a great year's campaigning !

National day of Action, Saturday September 16th

"Race against Climate Doom"

In London the "Race against climate Doom" kicked off from outside the ExxonMobil offices a little late after much leafleting/chatting with passers by. The racers/leafleteers, headed by a grim-reaper-like "Climate Coom" figure proceeded to take the message and the leaflets for November 4th through Covent Garden, Leicester Square and Piccadilly, meeting more 'Climate Racers' along the way. There was plenty of succesfull leafleting during pauses in Covent Garden and Leicester Square - getting through to the public was harder as we picked up speed through the "consumer-ghettos" of Regent Street and Oxford Street.

Finally the racers - replendent in crisp new "Race against Climate Doom" T-shirts arrived at the US embassy where, already underway, was the:

Party for Global Climate Justice

The Party comprised a wondrous succession of musicians and performance poets in the mellow and congenial ambiance of the Grosvenor Square Park - with the menacing facade of the embassy brooding in the background - but safely at a distance, beyond the banner-strewn hedge. The Party was just superb with a relaxed but positive atmosphere on an exceptionally fine September day - and went on until continuing would have meant a seripous argument with the Park police. This Party was definitely one of the best - out of our series of monthly "protest parties" at the US embassy

Meanwhile there were events and actions in Bristol, Cardiff, Cornwall, Exeter, Kent, Oxford, Sheffield and Southampton (that we know of !) plus an:

"Extreme weather" Event in Aberdeen
(Report by Almuth Ernsting)

Six of us were dressed up in 'extreme weather gear', we had a banner and placards and lots of photos, and we got through our leaflets much quicker than expected. We got coverage in the P&J and on BBC Radio Scotland (Aberdeen news). 13 new people joined our email list, which is the largest number from any one stall. I had a lot of good discussions with members of the public and the response was largely positive. Only one or two shouted angrily that 'there is nothing anybody can do about the climate changing'.

London, Saturday 19th August - Hell - Fire Party outside the U.S. Embassy

The world is heading for a “Hell” of Climate – Chaos : melting ice caps, massive flooding, stronger storms and wilder hurricanes, scorching heatwaves, droughts, famines…… wars over diminishing resources .
We urgently need strong coordinated action at the international level to save the world from the ‘hellish’ ecocatastrophe that a permanently destabilised climate will bring. But right now that action is being blocked and sabotaged by the Bush administration in the US.
Bush and the fossil-fuel industry cronies that dominate his administration are the beelzebubs of doom, doing a devilish job of dragging us all into CLIMATE HELL.

This was our message at the "Climate Hell-Fire" party at the US embassy. Several Lucifers, Beelzebubs, Satans etc assembled under our giant "Bush Wanted" poster-banner outsid the embassy but later retired into the park to allow a big Islamic anti-war demonstration to take the central space. Finally the music turned up (thanks Rob etc..) and a mellow, melodic, gathering was had into the early evening.

London, Saturday 15th July - G ATE my Planet Party outside the U.S. Embassy

Saturday 15th July 2006

As the G8 leaders met in St Petersburg we held a "protest party" outside the embassy of the country most responsible for setting a policy direction that can only lead to planetary catastrophe. Our message : "As long as "Energy Security" is the priority, extreme "Planetary Insecurity" will be the result. Until the global environment is priority number one, G8 leaders will continue to fail the people of the world, and condemn future generations to the hell of 'climate chaos'".

London, Sunday 25th June - Gangsta Party outside the U.S. Embassy

.

Continuing on from the last day of action the London group of the Campaign against Climate Change returned to the U.S. Embassy to remind the people inside that neither the issue nor the protests will stop until they stop acting like Gagsters and start taking action that is needed.

The area just in front of the Embassy was of limits to us and any possibility of moving the barriers was out of the question due to our lack of "barrier moving training".

The trade mark Greenhouse was assembled in record time with no complications and with a variety of people in the appropriate dress it was time to get the party underway.

Tea was ready available along with the usual array of postcards, leaflets, badges and sheets for names and email address of supporters.

Also with the aid of 30's music and a wide range of live performers with a substantial sound setup the entertainment factor far exceeded even our optimistic expectations.

The Party was hosted by The Rub (Revolutionation) with guests includin Sarah Bear, MC Excentral Tempest (Bones of Contention) and the Dreadful Jasper (Synergy.

Thankfully the weather was one our side for the whole day and offer of a free cup of tea was too tempting an offer for some to refuse.

We had support from a wide spectrum of people from Americans, Japanese, British and even a couple of local police. More names added to the even increasing list of supporters understandable eager for next months party.

The theme of the next party has not been 100% decided but we will once again hope to build on our success and come up with even more imaginative and entertaining was to get our point across that a problem that will effect every one will need involvement from everyone.

Thanks once again to all the supporters, performers, helpers and the local law enforcement (for their patience.)

See you all next time

London, Saturday 20th May - Tea Party outside the U.S. Embassy

As part of the National Day of Action on Climate Change, the London group staged the first of what will be monthly events outside the U.S. Embassy at Grosvenor Square.

The threat of an impending tea-party had apparently got the park authorities spooked and the entire space had been locked for May 20th for 'Security Reasons'. Preparations for thousands of tea-party participants had been made outside the embassy in what can only be described as overkill to suit the most commited mad hatter.

Preparations soon got underway in earnest: police looked on suspiciously as the greenhouse was erected, this was followed by general confusion diffusing through the constabulary as a white rabbit, mad hatter, caterpillar and playing card appeared along with Alice.

Later the music was provided by The Green Worriers + Richard Travan and then Rhythms of Resistance. Tea was served, cucumber sandwiches, cake and flapjacks consumed, along with organic apple juice provided by Shane Collins fund raising for the Green Party. Amongst notable events during as the music played was a (non too rare) example of Nick Hutton's dancing. Video

Overall we had a good day with the rain largely staying in abeyance and a lot of interesting conversations going on. The turnout was good considering the weather and many people had travelled from far and wide to be there, including someone who had made the journey all the way from Bristol to make tea, and who continued to provide tea for everyone throughout the whole event on his portable camping stove. Thanks indeed for that!

The next event will be held outside the US embassy on 24th June - A Climate Gangsta Party! Dress to impress.

Manchester, Saturday 20th May

Anne Saxon and the rest of the Manchester group managed to hook up with local Stop Climate Chaos activists to stage an event in central Manchester. As in London the weather was not entirely kind.

Norwich, Saturday 20th May

At 1030am Climate Change campaigners made a dramatic protest “Today Flying, Tomorrow Swimming” about the environmental cost of cheap flights:

A pile of Coal was dumped outside the Norwich Airport Shop in the Castle Mall.  The sooty carbon equivalent of the 320Kgs of Carbon Dioxide gas is emitted by each person taking a cheap flight.  These emissions are contributing directly to global warming and potentially catastrophic climate change.

Meanwhile, other protesters placed a banner reading “Flying today, Swimming tomorrow”, complete with a map of Norfolk under 5 meters of water, on the glass roof of Castle Mall above the Airport shop.

The N2C3 campaigners, some clad in wetsuits ready for when Norfolk becomes submerged, and others dressed as air hostesses, handed shoppers leaflets advising them to stop taking unnecessary flights, and instead travel to Europe by rail and ferry, and to take more holidays in England

Protester statements

Dr Andrew Boswell, a UEA computer scientist, said “It is fast becoming clear that taking regular cheap flights is very damaging.  Aviation emissions are increasing rapidly – soon householders and business will need to completely eliminate their carbon emissions just to continue flying.  We will literally be Swimming Tomorrow in our wetsuits if Global warming melts the West Antarctica ice shelf – Norfolk will be under 5m of water.  The only answer is to stop Flying Today”.

Mark Crutchley, a UEA environmental Sciences student said “Cheap flights don’t just damage the environment – they damage the region’s economy.  The UK economy has a deficit of over £15 billion a year from British people flying abroad and spending money there.  Of that nearly £2bn is lost to the economy here in the East”.

Christine Way, a business woman from Norwich, said “A cheap flights generates over 300 Kg of Carbon Dioxide per person – that’s like throwing 9 big sacks of Coal into the atmosphere.  We recommend that people travel to European destinations by train and ferry, and that people start to take more UK holidays and enjoy our own beautiful country.”
